What is primary care?

Primary care is often the first place to turn for non-emergency health needs. It focuses on accessible, ongoing and whole-person care—helping you understand health concerns, maintain preventive care and coordinate next steps when another type of care is needed.

How primary care can support you

A primary-care visit may include a discussion of new symptoms, health history, medications, lifestyle concerns and personal health goals. Depending on the clinician and your individual needs, primary care can also help organize preventive services, monitor ongoing health conditions and coordinate referrals or follow-up care.

When to schedule a visit

Consider scheduling a routine visit when you are due for a checkup, have a health question that is not an emergency, need help managing an ongoing condition or want to discuss preventive care. Do not delay emergency care: for severe symptoms such as trouble breathing, chest pain, signs of stroke, severe bleeding or a life-threatening concern, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Make the most of your appointment

Bring a current list of medications and supplements, your insurance card, relevant records or test results, and a short list of questions or concerns. Sharing changes in symptoms, family history, sleep, stress, diet, activity and medication use helps your clinician understand the full picture.

Prevention is personal

Checkups can be an opportunity to review preventive care such as blood-pressure monitoring, age- and risk-appropriate screenings, vaccinations and health habits. The right timing and services depend on your age, health history, personal risk factors and coverage, so your clinician can help create a plan tailored to you.

Building continuity over time

Having a regular place for routine care can make it easier to keep health information organized and to follow through on recommended next steps. A continuing relationship also gives you a place to ask questions as your needs change.
